ASBURY PARK, NJ (Aug. 29, 2011) The ShowRoom is pleased to announce the film festival lineup for the second annual AP IndieFest. In conjunction with ArtsCAP and the Asbury Park Film Initiative, The ShowRoom has assembled a diverse and cinematically impressive program for September 23 through 25 in Asbury Park. With a central theme of “films that change you for good,” the film festival will spotlight a cross-section of documentary and fiction films that deliver examples of positive societal change.
The opening night event begins with the award-winning documentary, “Louder Than a Bomb.” A riveting tale of four teams of teenagers who train to participate in the world’s largest poetry slam, “Louder Than a Bomb” tells the story of compassion, teamwork and trust. Documentary filmmakers Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel adeptly capture the film’s subjects as they make their way through the renowned Chicago poetry-slam competition. More than just highlighting the power of the spoken word, “Louder Than a Bomb” chronicles the journey from student life into young adulthood, utilizing poetry as a powerful tool to channel emotions and talent.
Immediately following the film’s screening, a special live program hosted by local producer Dana Reeves, known for his spoken-word program “Adult Relaxation,” will introduce audiences to local poetry performers and moderate a Q&A about “Louder Than a Bomb.” Then, the audience will become the judges in a live poetry slam. Performers include “LaChocolatebox" from Freehold, Jenelle Best from Neptune, and Kevin Elliott, also known as “Justice Truth,” from Neptune. An evening of poetry, art, passion, and the heady sincerity of "Louder That a Bomb, promise to set up a weekend of thought-provoking films.
"The theme of this year’s AP IndieFest, ‘films that change you for good,’ allowed us to select feature films that demonstrate examples of lasting or positive change,” commented Mike Sodano, co-owner of The ShowRoom.
"A film such as "Circumstance" will ensure that you never think the same way again about Iran," offers Nancy Sabino, co-owner and partner with Sodano. Sodano continued, “It's rewarding to work with our community partners, ArtsCAP and the Asbury Park Film Initiative, to produce a timely and compelling program of independent film. As a team, we collaborated to showcase films that can have a direct effect on the Asbury Park community. Our film roster showcases work that might have otherwise had no outlet in Asbury Park.”
Additional films that will be showcased at this year’s AP IndieFest throughout the weekend include:
- Sundance favorites, “Granito,” about four extraordinary women fighting for justice in Guatemala today;
- The insightful Iranian coming of age drama “Circumstance;”
- The scientifically supported case for plant-based diets, “Forks over Knives;”
- A captivating and inspirational feature about the Muhammad Yunus micro-loan program, "To Catch a Dollar";
- The British gay love-story, "Weekend;"
- And, in tribute to the late, acclaimed American filmmaker Sidney Lumet, the incomparable “Serpico.”
The AP in 3 Film Challenge, where filmmakers have a chance to produce a short film featuring the theme ‘Asbury Park on the Move,' will take place during AP IndieFest and is also expected to generate more applicants than last year.
